Local politics have got to be the slimiest, most intense, most despicable of all politics. Here in our little village, we have a new development in town. It's on a former GM property, nearly 100 acres on the Hudson River, and the plan tops out at $1 billion. Yes, with a "b" not an "m." It's been five years in the planning stages, while everybody waits breathlessly for their outrageously-high taxes to be
frozen or lowered, because of the massive influx of potential tax $$$, paid by Someone Else. Meanwhile, opposition to the plan grows, as it gets nearer to fruition and residents suddenly begin to pay attention to what's going on.
As in, "Wait, you mean they want to put a bunch of townhouses and offices and apartments down there? I want them to do it my way, and here's what I think..."
Some of the most vocal of the opponents of the Village plan are Boomer Guys, by the way. These are 50-ish men, very skinny for the most part, and not quite fully-employed. They seem to have a lot of time and energy to devote to their nay-saying, and they do it Big Time. They print flyers. They deliver flyers. They write emails. They send emails. And they go to public meetings: oh, do they go. They love to hear themselves speak. So, they speak and speak and speak and speak. And then speak. Then, if nobody shuts them up, they speak some more. There were a few of these Skinny Boomer Nay-Sayer Guys at the Village meeting last night, and what they do is Take Up a Lot of Time. They want things to go their way, see, and they can envision a perfect plan, and what everybody needs to do is just to listen to their views and then follow their lead. See, it's simple?
They are borderline Unbearable. Also, they tend to get the facts almost right, but just this side of wrong. (Insert shudder here.)
I listened to three hours of this last night, instead of devoting myself to my TiVo. For this, I missed this week's episode of Big Love? Horrors!!
On a completely and utterly unrelated note, I find this clip curiously satisfying. For no apparent reason, either.
