This is a mystery, a case of a famous, beloved Boomer actor/director who has made the Worst Movie Ever in The History of Movies, and nobody seems to have noticed.
I speak of George Clooney, born in 1961, who starred and directed in Leatherheads, a movie out on DVD that Should Never Be Rented. Ever. Or Pay per Viewed, either.
Everybody associated with this movie, actors like Renee Zellweger and John Krasinski, the two screenwriters, and Clooney himself, should be embarrassed to have had anything to do with this fiasco. The dialogue is a string of cliches; Clooney smirks and preens for two solid hours; Zellweger's super-puffy lips and smooshed yet immobile face make her seem like an alien refugee who has escaped from a science fiction movie. The movie is supposed to be about the roots of professional
football in the 1920's, but it doesn't make much sense, nor do we end up caring who does what to whom.
Clooney must have enormous prestige and power in Hollywood, since nobody seems to have noticed that he starred and directed in this mess. It's almost as if a massive case of Leatherhead Amnesia spread across the hills and valleys of greater Los Angeles, so that everybody forgave and forgot, for George's sake. Here are the co-stars: if the movie had been a Disney production, they would have been called Smirky and Puffy...
This is not a disaster movie: but it is a disaster.
(I'm cranky about this, because we were desperate for some post-turkey day entertainment, and this was supposed to be it. Sadly, it did not suffice.)
