Brothers and Sisters is, by far, the Boomer-iest show on television today. At least half, maybe more, of the main characters are over the age of 45 or 50, including Sally Field and Patricia Wettig and Ron Rifkin and Rob Lowe and recent guest stars Danny Glover and Steven Weber. But the Sap Content of this show has runneth over, into a gooey, syrupy mess. And I'm watching scenes I could swear I've already seen, at least once before. (Already seen scenes?) Eerily youthful Sally Field, playing matriarch
Nora Walker, is out on yet another date, this one with political consultant Isaac Marshall, played by Velveeta-voiced Danny Glover. The woman, 60-ish widow with five children who always seem to be either in her kitchen or hanging out in her living room, has more dates than the palm trees in all of Arabia. She's dated Chevy Chase and Peter Coyote and Treat Williams, to name just a few, since her cheating husband, Tom Skerritt, dropped dead in the pool.
In this week's episode, "The Missionary Imposition," here's a snippet of Date Conversation:
Isaac: "How are you?" (with great sincerity)
Nora: (Babbles about how her children are doing.)
Isaac: "I asked how are you, not your kids..."
Nora: "Oh! How am I? (Looks confused.) "I have no idea."
Sorry, but this woman is not that demented or spaced-out or inept. The writers seem to be Gidget-izing Sally despite the intelligent, insightful character she's supposedly playing. They make her go all Hugh Grant-y stuttery whenever she "likes" a boy. Ridiculous.
I'm just grumpy, because even though the writer's strike is over, it will be months before we see any new episodes of anything worthwhile.. . . . ...
