Brothers and Sisters has become the new, go-to Boomer TV show of the season. What other television show offers not only serious Boomer flirtation, hinting of still-remaining sexuality, but an all-out Boomer catfight?
In this week's episode, "Grapes of Wrath," Patricia Wettig (born in 1951), plays Holly Harper, the former secret lover of Nora Walker's (played by Sally Field) late husband. She begins flirting openly with Nora's wri
ting professor, played by the oily Peter Coyote (born in 1942), who had been invited to the party as Nora's escort. The two openly flaunt their sexual interest in each other for all the world to see. And they are both deep in boomerdom, or beyond! It's such an unusual sight in primetime American television programming, that it takes your breath away. (Or, if you are youngish, it might just make you gag on your junk food.) As for me, I find it refreshing and amazing, and it makes the pouting cutesiness of Calista Flockhart bother me much less than it normally would.
Later in this episode, Nora, play by Field, confronts Holly about the ostentatious flirting she's been doing, and other long-simmering slights. She tells her: "One more word, and I will rip the tongue out of your
mouth." Juicy! They are Women of a Really Certain (Older) Age, and they end up throwing food at each other, including strawberry shortcake, peas, lettuce, and whatever else is sitting on the kitchen counter. Nora tells Holly that she's a "car wreck" and Holly tells Nora, "you make me sick." All in all, a riveting high in boomer entertainment.
On a final note, Gilmore Girls has been cancelled. I like to think of it as a Mercy Killing. It's all for the best...
